Eyelids and Eyelid Lumps

Chalazion (Meibomian cyst, Hordeolum)

This is a blocked or inflamed (and sometimes infected) oily gland within the eyelid, usually near the lid margin. They may be referred to or confused with a ‘stye’ (which is an infection within the eyelash gland). Although most chalazia can be treated without surgery, a small proportion are persistent or become infected (abscess) and surgery is needed.
